Ski Trip in the Alps

As an avid skier, I’ve always felt drawn to the Alps. In the winter of 2023, I was at last able to travel there and ski down those mythical mountains. This article tells the story of my trip, but I’ll also give some tips for those who, like me, want to explore the unique playground that is the French and Swiss Alps. Having travelled and skied all over Canada, I’ve long had an eye on the Alps. In all the excursions organized by agencies or operators, however, I couldn’t find an itinerary that would allow me to do everything I wanted in five days. That’s why I came up with my own plan to go to the Alps with my girlfriend. The trip planning began by identifying the mountains where we wanted to ski. On the French side, I absolutely wanted to visit Chamonix and ski the mythical Mont Blanc and its incredible ski terrain. An appealing aspect of skiing in Europe is that everything is nearby. We wanted to take advantage of the vacation to also explore Verbier, Switzerland.   The airports of Lyon, France, and Geneva, Switzerland, are within comparable distances of Chamonix. I chose Lyon for two main reasons. First, flights and car rentals are much cheaper than in Geneva—Switzerland has quite a high cost of living. The second is that Air Canada offers a direct night flight to Lyon, which maximizes skiing time. I love sleeping on a night flight and heading straight to the ski slopes when I wake up. Despite the shuttle services offered, I rented a car, which allowed us to have more...

Skiing in Whistler: Julien Heon’s Picks

Twenty years ago, I had the opportunity to leave my hometown to live in Whistler for a year. I immediately fell in love with this place where the mountains are impressive and intimidating. Still, the proximity to Vancouver and its warm climate, even in winter, makes us forget about our frigid Quebec winters. Here are my picks. When I left Whistler to come back to Quebec, I told myself that I had to return at least once a year. As a content creator and ambassador for many brands in the ski industry, I find Whistler represents the perfect playground to replenish my portfolio. During my last trip in February, I met many Quebecers who were visiting for the first time and seemed lost in the immensity of the mountains. That prompted me to write this little guide of tips and favourites. To get there: Sea to Sky Highway Many choose the all-inclusive formula, and it is convenient. However, I prefer reserving and planning the trip myself, so I could rent a car instead of taking a shuttle. A car is a must for a 5 to 7-day trip because it offers more freedom. First, the road from Vancouver to Whistler, the Sea-to-Sky Highway is breathtaking. You’ll be able to stop and take in all the beautiful scenery. Squamish is situated halfway, you can stop there to buy the things you need at the grocery store and the Walmart. Also, if you’re a fan of craft beer, I highly recommend stocking up at Backcountry Brewing and Howe Sound Brewery. You can even eat there! Where to Stay in Whistler and...

Trip to the Heart of Rossignol Alpine Skis

Manufacturing alpine skis remains an extremely complex process. Exploration of a cutting-edge factory deep in the French Alps—the Rossignol plant in Sallanches. The Sallanches factory, located at the foot of mythical Mont Blanc, is one of the main factories manufacturing Rossignol alpine skis. Skis have been made there since 1963. Between 900 and 1,200 pairs of skis are produced daily in the Sallanches factory, which runs twenty-four hours a day. But why, with the exodus of so many manufacturing processes to Asia, does Rossignol still make its skis in Europe? The answer is simple. The manufacturing process is an art, and generations of craftspeople have worked in their factories. They draw on the unique know-how that has been handed down to them from their predecessors. The materials are of the highest quality, and the quality controls at each stage are extremely thorough. But above all, the people who make Rossignol alpine skis are as passionate as we are, and they take their work to heart. Rossignol Skis and Passionate Craftspeople The first thing that strikes me when I set foot in the factory is the smell of glue and the craftspeople’s passion. That same enthusiasm is also evident throughout the research and development process. Product managers tell us that an increasingly important aspect in selecting materials is not only their performance but also their environmental impact. What differentiates one alpine ski from another? Its stiffness, camber, sidecut and weight. Depending on the ski terrain and the discipline it will be used for, ski design involves thousands of hours of research and development in addition to testing with high-level athletes...

iPhone photography & Speed effect

Many of you have been asking – can we get a low speed shutter or speed effect shooting with an iPhone. The answer is yes, and pretty simple. You’ll need some practice, and a bit of luck, though. The first good news is that you can achieve this blurry / in motion effect without downloading or paying for an app. With your iPhone, ensure your are shooting in “live mode”. You’ll want to ensure that your phone is moving at the same speed as your subject. The idea is to create a link between you and the subject, which is what will then create everything else to be moving (or to be static while the subject moves). The iPhone will let you see if the focus is on the subject – you should be able to see the focus tracking on your subject’s face, if the subject is a person. Then, go see your photo, and swipe up, you will have different options showing below. One of them will be “Long Exposure”. Select this one, and if you were succesful, the subject should be relatively crisps while everything else should move. In the example below, you’ll notice the legs are also moving as we’re shooting someone on a bike, even more speed effect! Note that this photo was not...

Travelling in the pandemic

Travelling in the middle of the pandemic has been…different. Sanitary measures and protocols, less flight options, and, less people in the airport are just a few of the unreal factors kicking into this new reality. Here are a few photos, #Shotoniphone from the Montreal YUL and Toronto YYZ airports, in typical peak hours. The typical tail-end shot #ShotoniPhone Empty waiting area at YUL #ShotoniPhone Only 1 passenger walked into that plane! #Shotoniphone Empty Baggage pickup area when landing in Toronto (YYZ)...
